Animal Welfare needs your help; dog adoption fees waived to relieve overcapacity
Oklahoma City Animal Welfare has a plea: can you adopt or foster a dog from the OKC Animal Shelter? To help relieve the overcapacity dog population, the Animal Shelter is waiving adoption fees for all adoptable dogs.

OKC Animal Shelter to reopen for adoptions only starting Sept. 22 with waived adoption fees
Oklahoma City’s Animal Shelter encourages residents and animal lovers to adopt a dog and/or cat during its reopening event Sept. 22. Dog and cat adoption fees are waived to help relieve overcapacity at the Shelter. All adoptable dogs and cats are up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped.

Oklahoma City Animal Welfare encourages everyone to adopt a dog or cat this month from the OKC Animal Shelter. In celebration of Clear the Shelters Month, the Animal Shelter is waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats until Aug. 26.

Animal Shelter to temporarily close Sundays and Mondays
Because of staffing capacity issues, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter will temporarily close Sundays and Mondays until recently hired employees can complete onboarding. This change takes effect Sunday, Aug. 13.

OKC Animal Shelter to reopen for adoptions only July 21-23; limited intake begins July 24
Oklahoma City’s Animal Shelter invites residents and animal lovers to its reopening adoption weekend July 21-23. All adoptable dogs and cats are up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, treated for worms and spayed or neutered. About 200 dogs and 10 cats are available for adoption.

OKC to host hiring fair for animal welfare officers July 27
People 18 and older who want to make a difference in the lives of animals are invited to interview for animal welfare officer positions with the City of Oklahoma City. A come-and-go hiring fair will be held downtown between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on July 27 at 420 West Main St.

Canine flu confirmed at Animal Shelter
Lab results confirm canine influenza (flu) is the cause of the respiratory infection that forced the closure of the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter on June 3. It’s the same infection that shut the Shelter down from March 29 – May 15.

Animal Shelter infection - situation update April 18
To date, 298 dogs have shown symptoms of upper respiratory infection, and five dogs have died due to the infection. Because we were unable to test every dog, all dogs showing symptoms of respiratory infection were treated as if they were positive. Many of the dogs’ symptoms have subsided.

Animal Shelter infection - situation update April 5
On the day the shelter closed (March 29), the OKC Animal Shelter staff pulled samples from 10% of their ill dog population, which was 14 samples. Eight of the samples tested positive for the following: Streptococcus zooepidemicus (strep zoo), H3N2 Influenza and Influenza A (Canine Flu).

Animal Welfare challenges OKC to adopt 200 dogs in eight days
OKC Animal Welfare is waiving fees for dogs 40 pounds and over as part of its challenge to home 200 dogs in eight days. The challenge ends Feb. 25 with a live fashion show with the adoptable dogs as models.
