OKC Parks offers unique look at local churches during Stained Glass Bicycle Tour

Post Date:09/23/2016 8:29 AM

Residents can experience a colorful new view of Oklahoma City’s past during the Parks & Recreation Department’s Stained Glass Bicycle Tour from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. The tour will lead participants to four Midtown and Capitol Hill area churches, where local historian Al Turner will discuss the history and significance of each church’s stained glass windows.

The group will leave from Schlegel Bicycles, 900 N Broadway Ave. (east side of Broadway) at 12:45 p.m. Cyclists who want to have their bicycles inspected ahead of time may take them to Schlegel Bicycles beginning at noon.

The cycle route will take riders approximately 15 miles on city streets through the Midtown and Capitol Hill areas. The group will travel at an easy, no-drop pace. Helmets are required and beginning cyclists are welcome. Children under 12 years old must be on a tandem bicycle or in a bicycle trailer. Cost for the tour is $20 per participant and cyclists are asked to bring their own water.

“We wanted to offer a new way to explore Oklahoma City’s history,” said Doug Paulsen, recreation supervisor for the Parks & Recreation Department’s Woodson Senior Center. “The tour lets people see their city from a new two-wheeled perspective while also offering points of interest along the way.”

Tour stops include St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church and Southminster Presbyterian Church, with a refreshment break at Peletón Café, 900 N Broadway Ave., between the third and last stop.

Registration and payment must be made in advance. To register, call the Woodson Senior Activity Center at (405) 297-1456.
