OKC Council Meeting Notes: May 31, 2016

The Oklahoma City Council meets at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays on the third floor of City Hall, 200 N Walker Ave. Live broadcasts are available on Cox Channel 20 and YouTube. A recording of each meeting is then added to the City's YouTube channel. Check out the meeting calendar for agendas and schedules.

Event Permits

The Council approved permits Tuesday for:

  • Classen Ten Penn Neighborhood Association's "Classen Ten Penn Community Festival," June 4.
  • Perry Publishing and Broadcasting Company's "Juneteenth Festival," June 18.
  • Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma's OU Medicine Corporate Challenge," June 5.
  • Phat Wallet Investments' "Launch Party for Craft Beer Week," June 11.
  • Prodigal's "Oklahoma Tenacity," June 3-5.
  • Red Earth's "Red Earth Parade," June 10.

Council authorizes emergency contract for May Avenue bridge repair plans

The Council voted Tuesday to authorize an emergency contract for plans to repair the May Avenue bridge over Northwest Expressway damaged in a crash this month. By approving two items, the Council declared an emergency, authorized about $59,000 for the City's on-call bridge engineer to remove the damaged section of the bridge, approved the contract with the on-call engineer to develop repair plans and gave the go-ahead for emergency bidding for the repair project. Part of the bridge was knocked down when a tractor-trailer rig's load slammed into it, but traffic has re-opened on May with one lane in each direction over the undamaged part of the bridge. 

Construction bids sought for MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar storage and maintenance facility

Contractors will soon bid for the MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar storage and maintenance facility construction contract after the Council voted Tuesday to approve final plans and specifications. The facility, to be located at 406 SW 7th St., will be a service garage for the streetcar system. The streetcar will link current and future hot spots around OKC's urban core districts and attractions like the future MAPS 3 Downtown Public Park, MAPS 3 Downtown Convention Center, future Oklahoma City Boulevard, downtown, Bricktown, Midtown and Automobile Alley.

Call to Artists issued for Vietnam War memorial at Military Park

The Council voted to approve a Call to Artists for the Vietnam War memorial planned for Military Park. The project is funded by the Vietnamese American Community for Oklahoma City and the City's 1% for Art ordinance, which requires 1 percent of the construction budget for public projects to be spent on art. The contract is for up to $170,000.

Alternatives considered for potential future solid waste service changes

Larger bins and including cardboard for curbside pickup are among potential changes to future solid waste service, according to an update provided Tuesday to the Council. More recycling capacity and being able to recycle more materials are high on residents' wish list for potential service changes in the future.

Update on Council Priorities: Maintain Strong Financial Management and Promote Thriving Neighborhoods

Planning Director Aubrey Hammontree, Development Services Director Bob Tener and Finance Director Craig Freeman led an update Tuesday on two of the Council's Priorities: Maintain Strong Financial Management and Promote Thriving Neighborhoods. OKC's AAA-bond rating and the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative are highlights of the City's efforts in both areas.

Oklahoma City's May sales tax summary

The May sales tax report shows General Fund collections in Oklahoma City were down 2.9 percent compared to the same month last year, below the monthly projection by 6.6 percent. The May report includes collections for the last half of March and estimated collections in the first half of April, which total about $17.9 million for the General Fund. That’s around $1.3 million below the projection. May is the 11th month of the fiscal year, and sales tax revenue is 3.5 percent (about $7.2 million) below the year-to-date projection. The General Fund pays for the City’s day-to-day operations. Sales tax is the City’s largest single source of revenue.
