“Raise a Glass to Tap” is the message the City of Oklahoma City is promoting May 5-11 as it joins municipal water utilities across the country to recognize National Drinking Water Week.
Drinking Water Week highlights the critical role treated drinking water plays in our daily lives, thanks to the dedication of water professionals everywhere.
“The City’s water supply is critical to our ongoing vitality as a community,” City Manager Craig Freeman said. “Whether we think about it or not, water is in almost every aspect of our lives. We are tremendously fortunate to have a water utility that provides outstanding service and is making needed investments in our infrastructure to safeguard our water system for generations to come.”
The Utilities Department is working to meet future needs through a 5-year, $1.79 billion capital plan that includes improvements to enhance the efficiency of the City’s water and wastewater treatment plants. To serve over 1.4 million people in Central Oklahoma, Utilities staff treat and deliver an average of 100 million gallons of drinking water daily and maintain more than 4,000 miles of water mains.
“I am extremely proud of the work Utilities employees put in to serve our customers with water that is clean, safe and meets all State and Federal regulatory standards,” Utilities Director Chris Browning said. “Whether you are taking a shower, washing laundry, or enjoying a cool drink of water on a hot summer day you can thank the dedication of Utilities employees for keeping the water flowing.”
