Candidate filing deadline Dec. 6 for OKC mayoral election, Vote on Feb. 13

Candidates may file Dec. 4-6 to run in the City of Oklahoma City’s mayoral election, with voting in the primary election set for Feb. 13.

The election will decide Oklahoma City’s next Mayor, who will succeed current Mayor Mick Cornett. Mayor Cornett is not seeking re-election.

The next Mayor will be elected to a four-year term with an annual salary of $24,000.

If only one candidate files, that candidate is elected and will be sworn in as Mayor in April.

If multiple candidates file, the Feb. 13 primary election winner will become the Mayor if that candidate wins a majority of the votes.

If no candidate wins a majority in the primary, the two candidates with the most votes will stand in a decisive general election April 3.

The Mayor, who is elected at-large, and one Council member representing each of Oklahoma City’s eight Wards comprise the Oklahoma City Council.

Voting information

All Oklahoma City voters are eligible to vote in the election. To find your polling location, look at your voter ID card or use the Oklahoma State Election Board’s online voter tool at ok.gov/elections.

State law requires voters to prove their identity with a photo ID. Acceptable forms of ID include your voter ID card, driver’s license or another form of ID issued by the U.S. government, State of Oklahoma government or federally recognized tribal government.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is Jan. 19. Visit ok.gov/elections to download a voter registration application or get more information on registering to vote from the Oklahoma State Election Board.

You may also visit the State Election Board office, your county election board office, post offices, tag agencies and libraries to get a voter registration application.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the primary election is 5 p.m. Feb. 7. You can apply for an absentee ballot or download an absentee ballot request form at ok.gov/elections.

Overseas voters, including military members, can get more information about overseas absentee voting at ok.gov/elections.

Early voting for the primary election is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 8-9 at your local county election board.

Candidate information

To be a candidate for Oklahoma City Mayor, you must be:

A U.S. citizen.
At least 21 years old.
A qualified voter in the City of Oklahoma City.
Living in the City of Oklahoma City for at least three years before the election.
A registered voter in the City of Oklahoma City for at least six months before filing to run.

Candidates must submit a written declaration of candidacy, along with how the candidate wants his or her name to appear on the ballot.

Candidates must include a cashier’s or certified check for $200, or a petition supporting the filing signed by at least 2,500 registered voters eligible to vote for the candidate. The check will be returned if the candidate is unopposed, receives more than 15 percent of the votes cast in the primary election or advances to the general election.
