OKC breaks ground on first MAPS 3 Senior Health & Wellness Center

Post Date:09/02/2015

Oklahoma City and Healthy Living and Fitness, Inc. officials broke ground Wednesday on the first MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Center.

The center, NW 112 and Rockwell Avenue, will have a variety of wellness and social amenities and activities for OKC seniors. MAPS 3 funds are paying for the center’s construction, and Healthy Living and Fitness, Inc. will operate it once it’s finished.

“This is another important step in our evolution toward becoming a healthier city,” Mayor Cornett said. “We’ve built sidewalks and biking trails, and now we continue to invest in health and wellness in Oklahoma City with the groundbreaking for the first of four MAPS 3 Senior Wellness Centers.”

The 40,272-square-foot, $9.2 million center will have an indoor heated fitness swimming pool, an arts and crafts studio with a pottery room and kiln, a full-size gymnasium with a multipurpose court, fitness center, locker rooms, health screening center, reading room, walking track, aerobic studio with a cushioned floor, game room, café, meeting spaces, social lounges and more.

The center’s design has kept safety concerns and the needs of seniors in mind from day one, exceeding ADA and building code requirements. Small touches like a curb-less parking lot, enhanced lighting and the ability to enter the fitness pool by stairs, a ramp or a lift combine to make the center suitable for seniors of all activity levels and abilities.

“The Wellness Center should become the hub for those who desire a great place to maintain healthy living and interact with other members of the community,” Healthy Living & Fitness Board Member Bill Fleming said.

Additional MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Centers will be constructed in other areas of OKC and provide similar amenities and services.

Construction on the first center is expected to be complete in late 2016.
