Oklahoma City announces new Utilities Director

City Manager Jim Couch announced today the selection of Chris Browning as Utilities Director.

The City conducted a nationwide search for the position. Browning succeeds Marsha Slaughter, who retired in July after 15 years of service at the City of Oklahoma City. He starts Friday.

Browning’s previous position was President of Advanced Utility Consulting Services of Prosper, Texas, and previously served as Public Works Director of McKinney, Texas; Assistant Public Works Director of Fulton County, Ga.; and in other roles in the public and private sectors.

“Chris has extensive experience in local utilities, and he’ll bring a new perspective to an important position on our City staff,” said Couch. “There are a lot of important utilities projects coming up, and our residents can count on Chris’ leadership.”

The Utilities Department manages the City of Oklahoma City’s drinking water supply, solid waste and recycling collection, wastewater treatment and sewer lines.

Browning oversees 774 employees in seven divisions:

  • Administration
  • Engineering
  • Line Maintenance
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Utility Customer Service
  • Water Quality
  • Wastewater Quality

“I’m excited to put my experience and ideas to work for the residents of Oklahoma City,” said Browning. “As a lifelong utilities professional, it’s a fulfilling opportunity to be involved in so many projects that will have a lasting impact.”

Browning earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Southern Polytechnic (Ga.) State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Columbus (Ga.) State University.
