OKC Council Meeting Notes: March 8, 2016

The Oklahoma City Council meets at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays on the third floor of City Hall, 200 N Walker Ave., and live broadcasts are available on Cox Channel 20, YouTube and okc.gov. A recording of each meeting is then added to the City's YouTube channel.

Event permits

The Council approved permits Tuesday for:

  • Beck's Automotive's "4200 N. Western Block Party," April 3.
  • Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma's "Peace, Love & Goodwill Festival," June 5.
  • Prodigal's "O'City St. Patrick's Day Parade," March 12.
  • All Community Events' "Glo Run," March 18.

Myriad Gardens Foundation update highlights awards

The annual update on the Myriad Gardens Foundation highlighted the growing number of events and activities at Myriad Botanical Gardens and two prominent awards from 2015. The gardens, which are managed by the Foundation on behalf of the City of OKC, was designated as the country's Best Urban Open Space by the Urban Land Institute last year. The Foundation also earned the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits' 2015 Charles Schusterman Award of Excellence at the Oklahoma Nonprofits Excellence Awards.

Council defers final hearing on proposed aggressive panhandling ordinance

The Council voted Tuesday to defer a final hearing until March 8 for a proposed ordinance to limit aggressive panhandling. As currently proposed, the ordinance would ban panhandling within 50 feet of elementary schools and expand a buffer zone from 20 feet to 50 feet in front of City of OKC bus stops and other areas. The proposed ordinance was introduced Jan. 19 and had a public hearing Jan. 26, and its final hearing was originally set to be held Feb. 9 before it was deferred until this month.
