(March 22, 2016) -- The Oklahoma City Council voted Tuesday to approve an agreement to buy up to six streetcars from Brookville Equipment Corporation for the MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar system.
The $24.9 million contract is for five streetcars and includes an option to buy a sixth.
The MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar will link downtown, Bricktown, Midtown, Automobile Alley and other areas in OKC’s urban core, including the MAPS 3 Downtown Public Park and MAPS 3 Convention Center.
The streetcars are electric, powered by overhead wires and batteries. The system’s rails are flush with the street, and passengers will board on accessible platforms at stations along the route.
The contract is based on Brookville’s second-place proposal in last year’s competitive proposal process. The Council initially approved negotiations with the proposal process winner, but the Council moved to Brookville after the winner missed contract deadlines.
Two routes
The Council voted in February to approve two routes for the streetcar.
The east-west loop runs 2.04 miles linking Bricktown with some of downtown’s most popular destinations: Chesapeake Energy Arena, Myriad Botanical Gardens, Cox Convention Center, Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, the Devon Tower and the future MAPS 3 Downtown Public Park and Convention Center.
The east-west loop runs east on Sheridan Avenue from Hudson Avenue to Joe Carter Avenue, cutting south to Reno Avenue. It runs west on Reno to Robinson Avenue, then south to the future Oklahoma City Boulevard, west to Hudson and back north to Sheridan.
The north-south loop is 4.86 miles. It includes most of the Bricktown route, but turns north to connect the Central Business District to Automobile Alley and Midtown.
From Sheridan and Hudson, the north-south loop runs north on Hudson to NW 4th Street, east to Broadway Avenue, north to NW 11th Street and west to Dewey Avenue at Midtown’s Plaza Court. It then cuts south to NW 10th Street, then east to Robinson Avenue and south to Sheridan, where it turns east to follow the Bricktown loop along the rest of its route.
Rail construction is expected to begin late this year.
