City Council to consider changes to cycling ordinance

Post Date:01/14/2015

Oklahoma City Councilman Pat Ryan on Tuesday introduced proposed ordinance changes that would require cyclists to stay at least three feet away from vehicles they are passing.

The proposed changes, which are set for a public hearing at the Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, and a vote set for Tuesday, Jan. 27, would amend the City’s ordinance regulating bicycle and motor vehicle traffic and hold cyclists and drivers to the same standard.

The first of the two proposed changes would amend the City’s ordinance to mirror a state law that prohibits cyclists from passing other vehicles between lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction.

The second change requires cyclists to stay at least three feet from vehicles they are passing until they have completely passed them, which is the same standard drivers are held to when passing cyclists.

Ryan, who represents Ward 8, changed the proposal’s initial wording in response to feedback from the Oklahoma City cycling community.
