Don’t wait until after a disaster to volunteer to help – volunteer now with a disaster response organization to be in the best position to make a difference when your neighbors need you most.
Spontaneous, unaffiliated volunteers who report to the scene of a disaster may unwittingly hinder the response, or create a hazard for themselves or others. Becoming affiliated with a disaster response organization in advance ensures experts will send you to the right place, and you’ll be prepared with the right training.
Managing the sudden flood of willing volunteers in the immediate aftermath of emergencies is a challenge for those groups. That challenge is matched only by the difficulty of keeping volunteers involved as the days after an event turn into weeks and months.
If you’re interested in volunteering after a disaster, contact one of the disaster aid groups listed below to ask about volunteering and training. The list is not comprehensive.
