OKC Council Meeting Notes: June 20, 2017

Citywide vote set for Sept. 12 on proposed bond program and sales tax initiatives

The Oklahoma City Council voted to call a special election Sept. 12 for voters to consider investing more than $1.2 billion in critical infrastructure like streets and sidewalks, including an annual $26 million boost for public safety and other day-to-day operations. The Council approved three proposals to present to voters: A 10-year, $967 million bond package to invest in streets, police and fire facilities, parks and other basic needs; a temporary, 27-month continuation of the expiring MAPS 3 penny sales tax to fund $240 million for street resurfacing, streetscapes, trails, sidewalks and bicycle infrastructure; and a permanent ¼ cent sales tax to fund $26 million annually in police services, fire protection and other critical services. The original proposals were introduced May 30, and public hearings were held June 13, with an additional public hearing Tuesday for an amendment to the temporary tax proposal. Final votes were Tuesday.

Ordinance amendments proposed related to impounded, menacing dogs

The Council is considering proposed ordinance amendments that would create new requirements for dogs impounded by Animal Welfare, and dogs deemed to be menacing. The amendments are related to requirements related to the registration of impounded and/or menacing dogs, and conditions to be met before impounded dogs are released to their owners. The proposed amendments were introduced June 13, had a public hearing Tuesday and are set for adoption July 5.

Oklahoma company donates a year of pet food to Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare pets have their food needs taken care of for the third year in a row thanks to another generous donation from Shawnee Milling Company. The company has pledged to donate 50 tons of its HI-POINT pet food to the Shelter each year for the last two years, and renewed the pledge Tuesday for another 50 tons this year. Animal Welfare relies in large part on donations and partnerships with the community and animal welfare organizations. Oklahoma City's June sales tax summary

The June sales tax report shows General Fund collections in Oklahoma City were up 3.7 percent compared to the same month last year, above the monthly projection by 4.3 percent. The June report includes collections for the last half of April and estimated collections in the first half of May, which total about $17 million for the General Fund. That’s around $694,000 above the projection. June is the last month of fiscal year 2017, and General Fund sales tax revenue finished the year about 0.4 percent (about $863,000) below the amended projection. General Fund sales tax revenue has declined compared to the same month the previous year in 18 of the last 21 months. The General Fund pays for the City’s day-to-day operations. Sales tax is the City’s largest single source of revenue.
