The Oklahoma City Fire Department recently achieved an important rating for fire protection capabilities that could help residents and business owners keep costs down for property insurance premiums.
For the first time, the Fire Department achieved the highest Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating for fire protection for parts of the City served by fire hydrants.
“This is a direct reflection of our community’s investment in fire protection resources,” Fire Chief Keith Bryant said. “The data shows the relationship between excellent fire protection and minimized loss of life and property from fires, and we’re proud to have achieved the highest ISO rating possible.”
The ISO is an independent company that calculates ratings on a scale of 1 (highest) to 10 (lowest) that many insurance providers use when assessing risk and calculating premiums. Oklahoma City is now rated a 1 in areas with hydrants.
The ISO evaluation calculates a score based on the effectiveness of a city’s fire department (50 percent of the score), the water supply (40 percent of the score) and emergency communications (10 percent).
The City’s previous ISO score for areas served by fire hydrants was a 3, and had been for many years.
Of more than 46,000 municipalities rated by the ISO, only 241 have the top rating.
